Aknīste ( German Oknist , Lithuanian Aknysta ) is a small town in southeastern Latvia on the border with Lithuania.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1298. In the 17th century the area fell to Poland-Lithuania . 1660 began Jacob Kettler , a channel project, which the Dvina on the Suseja (lett .: the Courland Aa Lielupe ) should connect and brought for Aknīste economic recovery. The project was never completed and the city became part of the Kovno Governorate in the Russian Empire in 1795 after the third partition of Poland . In 1920 Latvia received the city in exchange for Palanga , which became part of Lithuania.
Aknīste has 1133 inhabitants (2016).
Aknīstes novads
In 2009 Aknĩste merged with three surrounding communities to form a district with 3236 inhabitants (2010).
