Band history

Marc Hollander and Vincent Kenis founded Aksak Maboul in 1977. With a number of guest musicians (including Chris Joris and Catherine Jauniaux ) and Marc Moulin as producer, they released their debut album As Marc Hollander & Aksak Maboul in the same year, Onze danses pour combattre la migraine . They mixed various musical forms and genres such as jazz , world music and electronic music . This experimental variety of styles was intended to point the way for the releases on Hollander's Crammed label, which he founded in 1980.

Work on a second album began in 1979, Michel Berckmans ( Univers Zéro ), Fred Frith and Chris Cutler were among others. a. involved. Un peu de l'âme des bandits appeared in 1980 under the band name Aqsak Maboul on Crammed Discs. It developed the experimental and eclectic style of the debut album. In the early 1980s, Aksak Maboul was part of The Honeymoon Killers, but there were still seven tracks on a sampler from 1984.

Hollander and Kenis remained musically active with the Crammed label. It wasn't until 2014 that more recordings by Aksak Maboul from the 1980s were released, followed by a tribute album in 2016. Since then the band has performed live again with various guest musicians. After a few pre-releases at the beginning of 2020, the double album Figures was released in May , on which, in addition to Hollander, Berckmans and Frith, Steven Brown from Tuxedomoon and the singer Veronique Vincent also participated.
