Marc Moulin

Marc Moulin (born September 1, 1942 in Ixelles ; † September 26, 2008 ) was a Belgian jazz and fusion musician ( piano , Hammond organ , keyboards , synthesizer ), music producer and author . He was one of the pioneers of electro jazz .

Live and act

Moulin, whose parents are the sociologist and author Léo Moulin and the poet and literary critic Jeanine Moulin, received music lessons at the Académie de musique in his native city. He studied political and economic sciences at the Université libre de Bruxelles . During his studies he worked as a jazz pianist . In 1961 he founded his own trio with which he won prizes at various jazz festivals. In 1963 he became a member of Alex Scorier's quintet . He also accompanied traveling musicians such as Dexter Gordon , Slide Hampton , Benny Bailey , Don Byas , Johnny Griffin and Clark Terry .

With Philip Catherine , Moulin founded the jazz-funk-rock formation Casino Railway in the late 1960s and played on their debut album Stream . Then in the early 1970s he became the organist of the jazz rock group Placebo , which also received international attention and won a prize at the 1972 Montreux Jazz Festival . In 1974 he recorded a first solo album. He was also one of the founders of the avant rock band Aksak Maboul in 1977 (and can also be heard on their first album).

In 1979 he founded the synth-pop band Telex with Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers. The band represented Belgium at the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest . Moulin's 2002 Blue Note album Top Secret , which amalgamated jazz with electro pop and soul music , sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide. As a producer, Moulin composed and produced songs for artists such as Lio , Alain Chamfort , Jacques Duvall , Viktor Lazlo and the Sparks . He also produced several albums by Philipp Catherine and wrote film music .

Moulin also worked as a journalist and radio editor. For the Belgian broadcaster La Première he developed the concepts for the programs Cap de nuit , King Kong , Radio Crocodile and Radio Cité ; he also had a weekly humorous column in the newspaper Télémoustique .

Moulin died of throat cancer . The remixer Denis Moulin ( La Malice ) is his son. The double CD Into the dark , released in 2002 on the Blue Note label in New Zealand, contains original recordings on the first sound carrier and remixes of the material by La Malice on the second .
