Action Albrecht I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The action Albrecht I. (Czech akce Albrecht I. ), also special action "A" , from September 1939 was after the action grid (spring 1939) the second big wave of arrests in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia after the so-called smashing of the rest of Czech Republic . It was a preventive arrest operation in connection with the attack on Poland on September 1, 1939. The name of the operation was derived from the card index of potentially dangerous persons (A card index). It affected at least 1200 people.

Meaning and course

Order to arrest a person from A-card index, September 1, 1939

After the lattice campaign, which took place immediately after the proclamation of the Protectorate and led to the arrest of up to 6,400 people, the Gestapo had been preparing the Albrecht I campaign since the summer of 1939, which was carried out at the beginning of the Second World War . It was directed against people who were not arrested in the first action: against social democrats and communists , anti-fascist and left-wing intellectuals, German emigrants , Jews and officers of the Czechoslovak army who were arrested preventively so that they would not strengthen the organized Czech resistance .

Among the approximately 2000 people arrested were the Mayor of Prague Petr Zenkl , the journalist Ferdinand Peroutka , the writer and draftsman Josef Čapek , the director of the Brno waterworks Vojtěch Beneš , the priest Josef Plojhar , the artist Emil Filla , the politicians František Soukup and Alois Neuman and other. At this point in time there was no need to take into account opinions abroad and so the arrested were immediately and directly transported to the Buchenwald concentration camp , sometimes with a stopover in the Dachau concentration camp . When the concentration camp was liberated on April 11, 1945, only 166 of the two thousand were there.
