Action Pink Germany

Start of the “Race for Survival” 2016. Those who take part in this run after suffering from breast cancer can, as a “survivor” to encourage others, make their “survival despite cancer” clear with a pink T-shirt.

The Pink Deutschland e. V. describes itself as an "Association for the Preservation of Breast Health and for the Cure of Breast Cancer". The Pink Campaign emerged in 2015 as a result of a name change from the association KOMEN Germany - Association for the Cure of Breast Cancer , which has been active since 1999 and which is the German section of the US association Susan G. Komen for the Cure, founded in 1982 (until the end of 2006: Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation ) understood. This foundation is one of the world's largest breast cancer aid organizations and can count on over 100,000 volunteers, primarily in the founding country, the USA , but also in Italy , Puerto Rico and - until 2015 - in Germany . From 2009 there were also KOMEN regional groups in Cologne , Heidelberg and Hamburg . The action Pink has, as its predecessor organization, based in Frankfurt and is recognized and non-profit organization.

Origin and activities

The US foundation, whose German representation the association initially saw itself, was founded in 1982 by Nancy Brinker , whose sister, Susan G. Komen, had died of breast cancer two years earlier at the age of 36. The foundation's seed capital was $ 200. According to its own information, the foundation raised a total of more than 750 million US dollars for the fight against breast cancer by 2004, of which more than 180 million US dollars were made available for research into breast cancer. According to the annual report of the KOMEN Foundation , a total of 232 million US dollars were raised in the 2004/05 financial year, of which 135 million US dollars came from the running events Race for the Cure ; 81 percent of the income was spent on the foundation's statutory goals. A total of 2.5 billion US dollars were raised between 1982 and 2012.

Like its American role model, the KOMEN Germany association also financed awareness-raising campaigns for the early detection of breast cancer and supported research into breast cancer therapy methods through donations raised. In 2002 the “Breast Health Hessen” model project was initiated and financed by the association. From 2004, two Frankfurt hospitals received financial support so that they could maintain psycho-oncological counseling centers and through them support the work of their breast cancer clinics. In 2010 there were 16 projects with a total volume of 184,000 euros. Up to 2010 , KOMEN Germany had granted a total of almost 1.2 million euros in funding in Germany. In addition, more than 20,000 brochures for those affected and their surroundings were distributed and sent nationwide every year, because breast cancer not only affects the sick but also partners, children, family, friends and colleagues.

From 2004 onwards , the "Pink Tie Ball" was organized by KOMEN Germany in Frankfurt am Main. This lavish, festive evening entertainment has been one of the largest and most successful charity events in the country for many years and also brought in six-figure amounts in donations in Germany, in 2008 for the first time more than 500,000 euros.

From 2007 onwards, every year KOMEN Germany sent “Pink Info Bags” to certified breast centers all over Germany (2007: 7,000, 2008: 10,000 and 2009: 15,000) and thus reached every fourth newly infected woman. In 2009 there was an award for this as part of the nationwide competition Land of Ideas .

From 2000 to 2015, on the last Sunday in September , KOMEN Germany hosted the 5000-meter Race for the Cure in Frankfurt am Main , which the Pink Germany campaign continues as the “Race for Survival” . The proceeds from this fun run , in which more than 7,500 runners took part in 2012, will benefit the association's awareness-raising campaigns.

From 2011 to 2015 there was also an annual fun run in Hamburg, and on June 16, 2012 such a charity run took place in Cologne for the first time. In 2016, planned charity runs in Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and Hamburg could not take place due to the separation from the US foundation.

17 years after its establishment, KOMEN Germany parted with the US-American KOMEN Foundation after it changed its business strategy and only allows “race partnerships” as a licensing business for the running label “Race for the Cure”. In addition to organizing the “Race for Survival” fun runs, the association has since been promoting Yoga for Survival in particular . Unlike the previous association KOMEN Germany , Aktion Pink Deutschland does not publish any proof of use of the funds collected on its website.
