Al-ʿAzīzīya (also El Azizia and al-ʿAzīziyyah ; Arabic العزيزية, DMG al-ʿAzīzīya ) is a city in northwestern Libya and the capital of the al-Jifara municipality .
The city has 4,096 inhabitants (2010) and is 55 kilometers from Tripoli . It is located in the fertile Djeffara plain on an important trade route from north to south Libya.
On September 13, 1922, a temperature of 57.7 degrees Celsius was measured in al-ʿAzīzīya during a sand storm . However, the accuracy of the measurement is disputed. If the value is correct, it represents the highest meteorologically measured temperature ever on earth .
