Al-Farabi 1 is an educational mission designed to connect young students with space travel. He is also responsible for testing new uplink and downlink technologies. The satellite also has a CMOS camera that can take pictures with a resolution of 3 megapixels on board. It is powered by solar cells and batteries.

Al-Farabi was one on 15 February 2017 a PSLV - carrier rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Center along with Cartosat 2D , INS 1A and INS 1B , Flock 3P 1-88 , Lemur 2 22-29 , PEASSS , DIDO 2 , BGUSat and Nayif 1 launched into a sun-synchronous orbit . With 104 satellites, the launch holds the world record for the number of launch vehicle satellites.
