The Al Jahili Fort (French), the fortress Al Jahili or fortress al-Jahili , Arabic Qalʿat al-Jāhilī ( Arabic قلعة الجاهلي, DMG Qalʿat al-Ǧāhilī ; see. " Jāhilīya "), is the most famous fortress in the United Arab Emirates and is located in the southeast of Al-Ain . His round watchtower adorns the 50 dirhams - touch , stood for the pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hannover model and serves as the logo of a drinking water manufacturer. The Fort was after its restoration by the Chicago Athenaeum received the International Architecture Award in 2016 and won the Terra Award for best clay building architecture in the world. In Pakistan's Swat Valley is a replica of the fort, which was inaugurated, 2013.

history

In 1891, the al-Jahili was built around the Al-Jahili oasis to protect the palm farmers in order to defend the water sources and surrounding settlements. The fort has been mentioned by several historical figures: According to reports, Percy Cox visited the fort in 1905 on his trip to Al Ain, in 1906 John Gordon Lorimer mentioned that the fort was built under the reign of Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan . It was restored by the Department of Antiquities and Museum in Al Ain in the mid-1980s and again restored by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage from 2007 to 2008. A visitor office, souvenir shops , a café and a larger public space for exhibitions and cultural activities were created. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to the English traveler, explorer and writer Wilfred Thesiger , who lived here several times in the 1940s at the invitation of the late Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nayan . Parts of his work and some of his most famous photographs are shown in the Al Jahili Fort.

The square fort has a length of 35 meters and a height of 8 meters. It has three round watchtowers and a rectangular watchtower on the northwest corner. The circular watchtowers are 5 meters in diameter and 14 meters high, and the rectangular watchtowers are 4 and 7 meters (13 and 23 feet) wide and 7 meters (13 and 23 feet) high and 14 meters (46 feet) high. The renovation in 2007 and 2008 was carried out by reusing the historical building constructions and building materials with thick clay walls and palm beams and was adapted to today's technical requirements.
