Al Marjan Island ( Arabic جزيرة المرجان, DMG Ǧazīrat al-Marǧān  'Coral Island') is an artificially raised archipelago in the Emirate of Ra's al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates .

Overview

The construction project is located between the Umm al-Qaiwain wetlands of Khor Al Beida and the Al Hamra settlement under construction in Ra's al-Khaima, just a few hundred meters west of the Bin Majid Beach Resort . The shape of the archipelago is said to be reminiscent of corals, hence the name. The complex consists of a total of four islands and a peninsula, which connects the complex to the mainland and, similar to The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai , will act as the main artery. The total area of the archipelago is approximately 2.7 km² and the construction costs are estimated by the developer Rakeen at 1.8 billion US dollars. Villas and apartment buildings near the beach as well as hotels, resorts, sports facilities and office complexes are to be built on the islands. The extreme end of the island is 4.5 km from the mainland, The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai has a similar extent. In total, the coastline will be extended by 21 kilometers.

development

The property developer Rakeen took over the construction project in May 2007 from the Ra's al-Chaimas civil engineering department. At this point the peninsula and the first island had already been filled up, as well as 40% of the second island. In February of that year, a contract for 50 million euros was signed with the Dutch company Dredging International to complete the earthworks on the project. Dredging International has already worked on other projects in the United Arab Emirates such as the artificial stretch of coastline Al Raha Beach in Abu Dhabi . The sand required for the backfill is sucked up from the seabed, 3–5 km from the island, and then backfilled in the required areas. The project was officially presented at the Cityscape real estate trade fair in Dubai in October 2007. In 2008, the earthworks on the second and fourth islands were completed, the work on the third island in January this year. Infrastructural work on the islands is currently being carried out by the Kumho Industrial Company after a $ 100 million contract was signed in 2008.
