Al Wabra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al Wabra (proper Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation; AWWP; Arabic محمية الوبرة الطبيعية, DMG maḥmiyyat al-Wabra aṭ-ṭabīʿiyya ) is a zoological institution in Qatar . She is known worldwide for keeping and breeding endangered species. The system is unique in the world.

About 2000 animals are kept on an area of 2.5 km² and are looked after by over 200 employees.

Al Wabra is not actually a zoo, but a collection of animals, similar to a collection of pictures or antiques. There is therefore no zoo-horticultural concept either, since the only criterion for admission is rarity.

The Spix's Macaw is one of the outstanding species that are kept here. The species is considered extinct in nature. There are still around 100 specimens in captivity. Two thirds of these animals live in Al Wabra. The rest is at the Loro Parque Foundation on Tenerife , at ACTP eV in Schöneiche near Berlin , the São Paulo Zoo and a dozen animals that are not part of the breeding program.

In 2013, veterinarians from Gießen managed to artificially inseminate Spix's Macaws for the first time, using a method developed at the University of Gießen . The first chick to emerge from fertilization bears the name "Neumann", after the doctor who performed the insemination.
