The Alain-Foechterle-Erich-Dilger Bridge is a bridge over the Rhine . Together with the bridges over the barrage and double lock Fessenheim, it is part of a communal road connecting Hartheim am Rhein in Baden and Fessenheim in Alsace .

The communities belong to the cross-border local association Mittelhardt-Oberrhein , which was founded in 1998 and had set itself the goal of building a Rhine crossing between Hartheim am Rhein and Fessenheim.

The structure, which costs around 4.4 million euros, has two lanes. One is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. The other is controlled by traffic lights and is intended for vehicles up to 3.5 tons total weight. Around 500 vehicles use the bridge every day.

The girder bridge, 210 meters long and 6.85 meters wide, is a steel composite structure that spans the Rhine with five spans. It has spans of 30 meters for the two-sided edge fields and of 50 meters for the other three inner fields.

history

The foundation stone for the municipal bridge construction was on April 22, 2005; On May 20, 2006, the inauguration of the Hardt Bridge Erich Dilger followed in the presence of the then French President Jacques Chirac . Erich Dilger was Hartheim's mayor from 1982 to 2001 and died on July 29, 2001 in Mindszent , Hartheim's Hungarian twin town.

In 2008, the former mayor of Fessenheim (1989–2008) Alain Foechterlé was named after the company. The two mayors agreed on a community partnership in 1993 . Foechterlé himself was present at the opening of the bridge in 2006 and died of a heart attack in 2008 during a New Year's reception by the community.

Since June 18, 2010 the bridge has been an official part of the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela .

The Zweckverband plans to set up a Franco-German documentation center in which the bridge is to be of central importance as an exhibition location. An ideas competition for this brought up four proposals by April 2012.

In midsummer 2013, flood damage to a base of the bridge pillar caused confusion regarding the meaning and consequences.
