Alain Schmitt (born November 2, 1983 in Forbach ) is a former French judoka . He was third in the 2013 World Cup.

Athletic career

The 1.76 m tall Alain Schmitt competed in the lightweight up to 73 kilograms until 2004. In 2002 Schmitt was second in the Junior European Championships. From 2005 he fought in the light middleweight division up to 81 kilograms. At the U23 European Championships in 2005 he won a bronze medal. In 2006 he reached the semi-finals at the European Championships by defeating the German Ole Bischof . After defeats to the Italian Giuseppe Maddaloni and the Dutch Guillaume Elmont , he finished fifth. With the French team he won bronze at the team world championships in 2006 and silver at the team European championships. At the end of 2006 he won a bronze medal at the World Student Championships. In March 2007 he won his first World Cup tournament in Warsaw. In 2009 he won the French national championships. At the European Championships in 2011 he reached the semi-finals by beating the Czech Jaromir Musil , after defeats against Elnur Məmmədli from Azerbaijan and against Ole Bischof, he finished fifth as in 2006.

In 2012, Schmitt competed at the Olympic Games in London and defeated Guillaume Elmont in his first fight. In the round of 16 he was eliminated by Ippon against the Argentinian Emmanuel Lucenti after 4:23 minutes. Schmitt celebrated his greatest success at the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro. With victories over the Canadian Antoine Valois-Fortier and the German Sven Maresch , Schmitt reached the quarter-finals, where he was defeated by the Georgian Awtandil Tschrikishvili . In the hope round he defeated the Belgian Joachim Bottieau and the Mongolian Otgonbaataryn Uuganbaatar and received a bronze medal. The following year he reached the semi-finals at the World Championships in Chelyabinsk with a victory over Nacif Elias from Lebanon. After defeats against Avtandil Tschrikishvili and against the Russian Ivan Nifontov , he finished fifth. In 2015 Alain Schmitt's international career ended with a second place at the Grand Prix tournament in Budapest and a seventh place at the Grand Slam tournament in Paris.
