Alan Reid (born August 7, 1954 in Ayr ) is a British politician. He attended Prestwick Academy and Ayr Academy and then studied mathematics at the University of Strathclyde .

Political career

In 1981 Reid joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). With the merger of the SDP and the Liberal Party to form the Liberal Democrats in 1988, he became active for this party. He first appeared in the by-elections in the Paisley South constituency in 1990 for national elections. These had become necessary after the death of the Labor politician Gordon McMaster . Reid did not win the mandate. Even in the general election in 1992 , he was unable to win the majority vote in the constituency of Paisley South with 9.1%. In the 1997 general election , he ran in the Dumbarton constituency , but missed the mandate again significantly. In the 2001 election , Reid ran for the constituency of Argyll and Bute . He was able to unite the largest share of the vote and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the elections in 2005 and in 2010 he defended his mandate. Between 2002 and 2005 and again between 2009 and 2010, Reid whipped up the group in parliament. In the general election of 2015 , Reid was unable to prevail against the SNP candidate Brendan O'Hara and subsequently left the British House of Commons.
