Political career

For the first time, O'Hara ran for elections at the national level in the 1987 general election. He applied for the SNP in the Glasgow Springburn constituency , but was clearly defeated by Labor candidate Michael Martin . In the 1992 general election , O'Hara ran in the neighboring constituency of Glasgow Central . In these elections, too, he was unable to prevail against the Labor candidate, in this case Michael Watson .

In the British general election in 2015 , O'Hara ran for the SNP in the Argyll and Bute constituency . He stood against the Liberal Democrat Alan Reid , who represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since 2001 . After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, O'Hara achieved the highest percentage of votes and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. In the newly formed parliament, O'Hara was the first new MP to give his maiden speech. He acts as the party spokesman for defense.

With a loss of votes, O'Hara was able to maintain his mandate in the 2017 general election just ahead of the conservative challenger Gary Mulvaney.
