Alan Wells

Alan Arthur Wells (born May 1, 1924 in Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire , † November 8, 2005 ) was a British engineer . He is known for his research on crack and brittle fracture mechanics and for the Wells turbine .

From 1964 to 1977 he was Professor of Structural Science at Queen's University in Belfast . From 1951 to 1964 and from 1977 until his retirement in 1988 he was employed by the British Welding Research Association (BWRA, British Welding Technology Research Association ). Most recently he worked on wave energy machines and in the late 1980s he developed the innovative Wells turbine, which always rotates in the same direction even with changing air flows.
