Alaska Supreme Court

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alaska Supreme Court is the Supreme Court of the State of Alaska .

Basics

The court has existed since 1959. The decisions of the Alaska Supreme Court are binding on all other courts in the state of Alaska, and the only court that can appeal against a decision is the United States Supreme Court .

The court meets monthly in Anchorage, and approximately quarterly in Fairbanks and Juneau, and in other Alaska communities as needed. It is usually preferred to have oral hearings in the city where the case was heard.

The Alaska Supreme Court is composed of the Chief Justice and four associate judges, all of whom are appointed by the Governor of Alaska and one of whom must then face an election. One of the five members is selected for a three-year term to serve as Chief Justice of the Court.
