Alaverdi Monastery

The Alaverdi Monastery ( Georgian : ალავერდი, ალავერდის მონასტერი ) is an Orthodox monastery in the region of Kakheti in Georgia . It is located in eastern Georgia, near the village of the same name, 25 kilometers from the city of Akhmeta and in the Alazani valley . The monastery was founded in the 4th century by Ioseb Alawerdeli (Ioseb of Alawerdi). In the 11th century a new larger church was built in the monastery of Kwirike III. (King of Kakheti) erected. This building is still the main church of the Alaverdi Monastery and is known under the name "Alaverdi Cathedral" (Georgian: ალავერდის ტაძარი). The building is the third largest church in Georgia (after the Sameba Cathedral and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral ) and at 53 meters, the second highest after the Sameba Cathedral.

The cathedral has the external dimensions of 42 meters in length, 27 meters in width and is 53 meters high. It was built with quarry stones and its facades are clad inside and outside with travertine . The church suffered severe damage in the late 15th century and was rebuilt afterwards. An earthquake in 1742 caused particularly severe damage. During the restoration work, brickwork was moved in some areas. Major restoration work was carried out in 1967. During this work, parts of old wall paintings with portraits of important personalities as well as interesting shapes and architectural parts were discovered. The heavily fortified and crenellated high protective wall around the entire site also encloses structural remains of a palas (17th century), refectory and bathhouse as well as a bell tower and some small buildings.
