The mighty Alayta shield volcano covers an area of 2,700 square kilometers in the west of the Danakil Depression, southwest of Lake Afrera in Ethiopia . The height of the volcano is 1501 meters, its last known eruption dates from 1915. A chain of younger craters forms a north-north-west oriented axis in the basaltic-trachytic shield volcano. The Alayta lava field , covered by fresh lava flows, was formed from north-south facing fissures. Fumaroles can be observed in two areas in the south of the volcanic complex . Historical records show another eruption on the southeast flank of the volcano from June to August 1907.
