Albatros Literature Prize

The international Albatros Literature Prize of the Günter Grass Foundation Bremen has been awarded every two years for contemporary narrative prose , poetry or essay writing to foreign-language authors and their translators since 2006 .

Choice and price

The award “goes to authors from all over the world whose work is characterized by high literary quality and cultural and socio-political relevance”. Furthermore, “the award-winning work is intended to promote open thinking and free discussion with all areas of our life, with our world and our time” (quoted according to guidelines for award). The outstanding translation into German is also recognized.

The jury is convened by the Günter Grass Foundation. The right of nomination for the award winners lies exclusively with the jury. The award ceremony will take place in Bremen . The prize money is 25,000 euros for the author and 15,000 euros for the translator (s).

  • Michael Hulse (Professor of Literature, University of Warwick, Kent)
  • Wilfried F. Schoeller (author, literary critic, general secretary of the German PEN)

The 2006, 2008 and 2010 jury also included:

  • Helmut D. Frielinghaus (formerly Luchterhand publishing director, editor, translator)
  • Peter Ripken (Managing Director of the Society for the Promotion of Literature from Africa, Asia and Latin America eV / Frankfurt at the Frankfurt Book Fair)
  • Dietrich Simon (formerly publishing director "Volk und Welt", managing director of the S. Fischer Foundation)
