Alberich from Montecassino
Alberich von Montecassino (* around 1030 near Benevento; † after 1105) was a monk in Montecassino and author of theological and hagiographic writings as well as treatises on the art of style.
By 1065 at the latest he was a monk in Montecassino, where he worked as a teacher. Johannes von Gaeta was one of his pupils and he was friends with Desiderius von Montecassino and Petrus Damiani . In 1079 he discussed the doctrine of the Eucharist with Berengar von Tours in Rome , the treatise De corpore Domini is lost. In another lost treatise he defended Gregory VII against Henry IV. His rhetorical treatises include the Breviarium de dictamine and the Flores rhetorici , while the authorship of the Rationes dictandi is disputed in modern literature. He was a representative of the older rhetoric, but his works show approaches to Ars dictandi , which were taken up and further developed by the first teachers of this art in northern Italy.
There are no contemporary sources for the assumption first published by Onofrio Panvinio , which has been repeated many times, that he was a cardinal.
