Albert Auguste Toussaint Brachet (born January 1, 1869 in Liège , † December 27, 1930 in Brussels ) was a Belgian embryologist and professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles . Since 1932, the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique has awarded the Prix ​​Albert Brachet for the best work in the field of embryology.

Life

Brachet began studying medicine at the University of Liège , during which he took a course in zoology and embryology at Édouard von Beneden . It was through his enthusiasm that von Beneden noticed the student and invited him to work in his laboratory. After a year (1887/88), he began to work for the anatomy professor Auguste Swaen while still studying medicine . While still a student, he wrote his first scientific work on cartilage resorption and bone growth in birds. At the age of 25, he obtained a doctorate in medicine in 1894.

After studying in Scotland with William Turner and Germany with Ernst Gaupp , he became a prosector in Liège in 1899 . Scientifically, he dealt mainly with organogenesis and gastrulation . His excellent scientific reputation led to his appointment to the anatomy professorship at the Université libre de Bruxelles in 1904.
