Albert Friedrich Hoppe

Albert Friedrich Hoppe (born July 24, 1828 in Rostock , † May 31, 1911 in St. Louis ) was a German-American Lutheran theologian and university professor.

Live and act

Hoppe was the son of a Mecklenburg surgeon. He studied theology at the universities of Erlangen , Dorpat and Rostock (matriculated in April 1849 and October 1851). He married Katharine Hubertine Crull, b. Braun, the young widow of Hofrat (Georg Christoph) Friedrich Crull, who died in 1849, and the mother of August Crull . In 1855 the family emigrated to the USA. Hoppe was pastor in New Orleans (1856–1868) and was a professor at the Lutheran Academy there and at the Progymnasium (1881–1886). In 1886 he became professor at the Concordia Seminar of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and took over the editing of the revision of the 24-volume Luther edition by Johann Georg Walch , which he supervised until his death and for which he wrote Luther's Latin writings, including the Psalms Commentary, newly translated into German.
