Albert Gregorius
Albert Gregorius (born October 26, 1774 in Bruges ; † February 25, 1853 there ) was a Belgian portrait painter and art teacher.
Albert Grégorius began studying painting at the Academie voor Schone Kunsten Brugge with Franciscus Josephus Octave Van der Donckt (1757–1813). He came to Paris in 1801, became a student of Joseph-Benoît Suvée and, from 1802, of Jacques-Louis David . He stayed in Paris until 1835, when he became a member of the local “De Club van de Belgen”. Back in Bruges, he was appointed director of the Academy of Fine Arts. For two semesters, one of his students was the Englishman Ford Madox Brown .
Among the many neoclassical portraits he made are those of Napoleon , Louis XVIII. , Charles X. and Louis-Philippe .
Albert Gregorius was appointed officer of the Legion of Honor .
