Albert Michael Powell

Albert Michael Powell (born August 26, 1937 in Coleman , Texas ) is an American botanist and plant collector . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " AMPowell ".

Live and act

Powell is one of three children of bricklayer Everett Powell and his wife Welma. He was interested in biology from an early age, but his fascination for botany only developed during his studies at Sul Ross State University in Alpine , Texas . In 1957 he received his associate of arts degree from Howard County Junior College in San Angelo . He then graduated from Sul Ross State University with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts. In 1963 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. and went to Sul Ross State University's Faculty of Biology. In 1968 he was appointed professor. Between 1978 and 1997 he was chairman of the botanical department. In 2003 he retired as Professor Emeritus. Powell conducted intensive studies in the Chihuahua Desert and collected over 100,000 plant specimens for his herbarium in Sul Ross. In 1996 he opened a cactus garden with 124 different species from the Chihuahua Desert on the campus of Sul Ross State University.

Powell has published over 100 scientific articles in professional journals and wrote several books, some with his wife, Shirley, with whom he has three children. His best-known books include Trees and Shrubs of the Trans-Pecos (1988), Cacti of the Trans-Pecos (2004) and Cacti of West Texas, a Field Guide (2008).
