Albert R. Henry
Albert Royle Henry (born June 11, 1907 in Aitutaki , Cook Islands , † January 2, 1981 in Rarotonga , Cook Islands) was a politician of the Cook Islands.
biography
After self-government in free association with New Zealand was granted on August 4, 1965 , Henry became the Cook Islands' first premier as chairman of the Cook Islands Party . Henry was confirmed as prime minister in the four subsequent elections. In 1978, however, he was dismissed and subsequently charged with electoral fraud and corruption . In 1979 he pleaded guilty and was then banned from politics for three years. However, after an appeal , this ban was lifted.
On April 11, 1980, he was stripped of his knighthood as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire , which was awarded in 1974 by Queen Elizabeth II .
Henry was a cousin of Geoffrey Henry , who was Prime Minister of the Cook Islands in 1983 and 1989 to 1999.
