Sir Geoffrey Arama Henry KBE (born November 16, 1940 in Aitutaki , Cook Islands , † May 9, 2012 ) was a politician in the Cook Islands.

biography

Henry was a cousin of Albert R. Henry , the first Prime Minister of the Cook Islands after granting self-government in 1965, and a member of the Cook Islands Party .

On April 13, 1983, he was the first to succeed Tom Davis himself premier , but had to hand this office back to Tom Davis on November 16, 1983. During his tenure, he was also Minister of Finance .

After the election victory of the Cook Islands Party, he was again Prime Minister and Finance Minister on February 1, 1989 and held these offices until he was replaced by his fellow party member Joe Williams on July 29, 1999. In 1992 he was named Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for his services . In 1996 he carried out extensive financial reforms, which also provided for the reduction of government employees by 60 percent and led to job cuts from 3,500 to 1,440 government employees for around 18,600 residents. This also halved the national budget .

During the tenures of Prime Ministers Robert Woonton and Jim Marurai , he was Deputy Prime Minister and Treasury Secretary from 2002 to 2003 and 2004 to 2005.
