Albert Satoshi Kobayashi (born December 9, 1924 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American engineering scientist .

Kobayashi studied at the University of Tokyo with a bachelor's degree in 1947, worked as an engineer in Japan (Konishiroku Photo Industry) until 1950 , studied at the University of Washington with a master's degree in 1952 and at the Illinois Institute of Technology with a doctorate in mechanics in 1958 From 1953 to 1955 he worked as an engineer at Illinois Tool Works and from 1958 to 1975 at Boeing . In addition, he was from 1958 Assistant Professor and later Professor at the University of Washington, from 1988 as Boeing Pennell Professor of Structural Analysis .

He dealt with the mechanics of brittle fractures, experimental stress analysis (interferometric moiré analysis), elasticity theory, statics and dynamics of mechanical structures.

In 2007 he received the Daniel C. Drucker Medal and in 2010 the Nadai Medal . In 1997 he received the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun (with gold rays and collar). He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering , the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and an honorary member of the Society for Experimental Mechanics .

From 1977 to 1984 he was Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Mechanics .
