Albert Volkart (born April 22, 1873 in Hombrechtikon , Switzerland ; † August 3, 1951 in Männedorf ) was a Swiss crop scientist . From 1925 to 1943 he taught at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich .

Live and act

Albert Volkart, son of a country doctor, took part in an agricultural training course from 1889 to 1891 and then studied at the Department of Agriculture at ETH Zurich. After the diploma examination he became an employee in the Swiss semen control station headed by Friedrich Gottlieb Stebler . Here he mainly dealt with problems of seed control . His treatise " Studies on the parasitism of Peticularisarten " with which he in 1899 at the ETH Zurich Dr. phil. received his doctorate, brought him into close contact with questions of plant physiology .

Since the control station headed by Friedrich Gottlieb Stebler was increasingly dealing with problems of alpine forage production , Volkart devoted himself mainly to this field of work after completing his doctorate. He was a collaborator and co-editor of the last editions of Friedrich Gottlieb Stebler's four-volume work " The Best Forage Plants " (1908 and 1913). Volkart was intensely involved in specialist agricultural organizations , including the crop production commission of the Swiss Agricultural Association, the working group for the promotion of forage production and the society of Swiss farmers.

In 1917 Volkart took over the management of the Swiss Seed Control Station as the successor to Friedrich Gottlieb Stebler, which he merged with the Swiss Agricultural Chemical Research Station to form the Federal Agricultural Research Institute in 1920 . From then on he also dealt with questions of plant nutrition and the control of fertilizers and animal feed .

From 1925 to 1943 Volkart was a full professor for crop production at the ETH Zurich , but at the same time remained head of the Federal Agricultural Research Institute until 1929. As a university lecturer, he worked on numerous questions brought to him from agricultural practice, above all problems of weed control , soil cultivation and the choice of varieties . He published his research results mainly in the “Swiss Agricultural Yearbook” and in the “Swiss Agricultural Monthly Bullets”. With his pioneering work, he has sustainably promoted crop production in Switzerland. Volkart was an honorary member of the “ Society of Swiss Farmers ”.
