Albert Weitnauer

Albert Weitnauer (born May 30, 1916 in Blumenau , Brazil ; † December 29, 1984 in Bern ) was a Swiss diplomat and the first State Secretary of the Swiss Confederation.

Life

Weitnauer was born in 1916 in Blumenau, Brazil, as the son of the architect Albert Weitnauer-Hoeschl. From 1926 to 1935 he attended schools and the humanistic grammar school in Basel . From 1935 to 1940 he studied law in Basel and graduated as Dr. iur. from.

In 1941 he joined the federal administration as a legal clerk at the Federal Central Office for War Economics and in 1945 became deputy head of the office. In 1946 he became deputy head and later head of the USA and world trade policy section in the trade department of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs.

1948/49 and 1955-1958 he was Legation Counselor at the Swiss Embassy in Washington . In 1951 he became the first section head in the commercial department. 1953/54 he was Legation Councilor in London , 1959-1971 delegate for trade agreements and special missions, USA, Canada, EEC and Eastern Europe. In 1960 he was appointed minister and in 1961 president of the "Working Group for Historical Positioning". 1961/62 head of the Swiss GATT delegation in the "Dillon Round" and 1962–1967 in the "Kennedy Round" (Switzerland became a full member of the GATT, the increase in clocks was lifted). 1966 ambassador ad personam. From 1971 to 1976 the Swiss ambassador was in London ; 1976 Secretary General of the Political Directorate of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. 1979 first Swiss State Secretary in the Political Directorate . In February 1980 he was given leave of absence from the Federal Council at the request of Pierre Aubert and subsequently resigned.
