The Alberta Interscience Association is a non-profit organization based in Edmonton , Canada . It was founded on April 22, 2009 and runs projects for adults, adolescents and children.

Native plants of Alberta

The association works with Lillian Osborne University (LOHS) to maintain Alberta's native plants. For this purpose, a separate garden was inaugurated on June 9, 2010 to promote knowledge about Alberta's native plants through environmental education, to protect these plants and to carry out research and conservation projects. In 2012 the garden counted around 1000 different plant species. Among other things, owls, rabbits and other wild animals are attracted because the garden creates a favorable habitat for them, which in turn can become a good research topic for the students. The association has published basic instructions on its website for those who would like to start their own garden. To educate students about native plants and explain the importance of their conservation, the Alberta Interdisciplinary Association organized a summer camp on the Bed Rock Seed Bank farm and later participated in a landscaping project in one of the Edmonton parishes took place.

Youth programs

Accredited Russian School in Edmonton

The Russian education center at the association was founded in July 2010. One of its goals is to preserve the Russian language and culture in the Russian community and to promote it in the multicultural Canadian society. In the center, students learn not only the Russian language, but also Russian literature and history. The center's Russian school is officially accredited to teach Russian. Some of the students continue their studies after 12th grade in the Summer Russian Language and Culture Course at the University of Washington , where they study the writings of Alexander Pushkin , Nikolai Gogol , Anton Chekhov , Korney Chukovsky , Alexander Vampilov , etc.

International youth program

The association coordinates a group of young people (14-25 years), as participants in the award program of the Duke of Edinburgh are logged (Duke of Edinburgh Award Program). It takes place in schools, colleges, universities, youth clubs, churches, air, army and naval cadet corps, scout clubs, girls leader and hockey clubs. Many young members of the Alberta Interdisciplinary Association have been awarded bronze, silver and gold awards.

Johann Strauss Ball

Since 2007 the association has participated in the annual Johann Strauss Ball, which is organized in Edmonton by the Johann Strauss Foundation. The ball is held with the aim of supporting Edmonton musicians and their efforts to continue their musical studies in Austria. Every year the Johann Strauss Ball becomes an evening of dance, delicious food and fine music.

Sports Museum

The Sports Museum is dedicated to the legendary Canada - USSR series of hockey games in 1972 and opened in 2012 to commemorate its 40th anniversary.

Virtual Museum of Nikolai Selinsky

The virtual museum was founded in June 2014, on the eve of the centenary of the First World War. The collection includes books, photos and videos telling about Selinski and his family, as well as web links to Selinski's museums in Moscow and Tiraspol . The virtual museum was developed in collaboration with the Selinski Foundation. It was named after the Russian chemist Nikolai Selinski .

The association also maintains a permanent exhibition of books, articles and photos by Selinski and members of his family.

National costumes

Library

The library contains over 20,000 articles, mostly in digital form, in 12 languages ​​- English, French, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, etc. These include books on history, culture and religion, textbooks, and aesthetic literature for adults and children.

International projects

Between Alex and Sasha

In 2010 Shohei Miyajima came to Edmonton from Keio University (Japan) to make a documentary about the Russian community in Edmonton. The members of the Interdisciplinary Association of Alberta supported him and participated in this documentary. The film Between Alex and Sasha has been shown successfully in Canada and Japan. The filmmaker has said that his goal was "(...) to break down prejudice against immigrants by showing a healthy, culturally rich, and highly educated community."

International Mother Language Day

As a member of the Association of International and Mother Languages (IHLA), the Russian Education Center is one of the organizers and participants in the annual celebrations for International Mother Language Day in Edmonton. In 2015 Edmonton International Mother Language Day was officially opened by Mayor Don Iveson and City Councilor Amarjeet Sohi.

The world day of culture

In 2013 and 2014 the association organized the celebration of World Day of Culture (July 15 is the anniversary of the Roerich Pact) in Edmonton. In 2014 the celebration was organized in collaboration with the Edmonton Theosophical Society . In 2015, the association took part in the University of Alberta's International Week with a documentary film about Nikolai Roerich and the Roerich Pact .

Adult education

Another goal is to help the newcomers adapt to their new life more quickly. The association offers ESL classes and computer courses for adults. These programs are funded by the Edmonton Community Adult Learning Association (ECALA) and are free to immigrants and Canadian citizens.

The teachers and members of the Alberta Interdisciplinary Association believe that the ability to understand different languages ​​contributes to the linguistic diversity of society and a better understanding of people from different cultures.
