Alberto Aza Arias

Alberto Aza Arias (born March 23, 1937 in Tétouan ) is a Spanish career diplomat.

Life

His parents came from Asturias . He graduated with a Bachelor of Law and Art from the University of Oviedo . In 1965 he entered the Spanish diplomatic service and became Secretary of the Embassy in Libreville (Gabon). On June 5, 1967, he was accredited in Algiers .

From 1972 to 1975 he was accredited in Rome. From 1975 to 1977 he was employed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Middle East Department. In 1977 he became deputy head of the Oficina de Información Diplomática (press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). As such, he was busy with protocol, represented the Kingdom of Spain at the coronation of Jean-Bédel Bokassa and met Juan Carlos . From 1977 to 1981 he was director of the government cabinet of Adolfo Suárez in the Moncloa Palace .

When Suárez submitted his resignation in February 1981, Aza was a candidate for Parliament in Huelva for the Centro Democrático y Social . From March 1981 he was again employed in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was General Director of the Ibero-America Department from 1983. Shortly afterwards he was counselor at the Spanish embassy in Lisbon .

In 1985 he became a permanent observer of the Spanish government at the Organization of American States . From 1989 to 1990 he was the Spanish Ambassador for Belize in Washington . In 1990 he became the Spanish ambassador to Mexico City . From December 18, 1992 to 1999, he was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s .

From 2000 to 2002 he headed the Oficina de Información Diplomática . In September 2002 he became General Secretary at Casa de Su Majestad el Rey, replacing Fernando Almansa.
