Albina Africano

Albina Assis Africano (born June 3, 1945 in Luanda , Portuguese Angola ) is an Angolan chemist and politician .

Life

education

Albina Assis Africano was born on June 3, 1945 in Luanda, the capital of the Portuguese colony of Angola. Africano completed her school education at the Instituto Industrial in the colonial capital.

In 1972, before Angola gained independence in 1975, Africano began studying in Luanda. She completed her BA in chemical sciences at the Universidade Agostinho Neto , graduating in 1982. After completing this degree, she decided to continue specializing in the sciences of oil production, including stays in Antwerp (1984), at the Institute of Oil Sciences in France (1987), internship at Lindsey in the UK (1988) and at the College of Pretroleum and Energy Studies , Oxford (1989).

Professional background

In parallel to her academic training and specialization, Africano worked in various positions in the Angolan state. After completing her schooling, she first worked as a teacher (1968-75) until after Angola's independence she headed the National Laboratory for Chemical Analysis ( Laboratório Nacional de Analises Químicas ), which she held until 1983.

She then moved to the Fina-Angola oil production , where she worked as a chemist for two years before she was promoted to head of department at the Fina refinery in Angola (1985-91). From August 1991 to December 1992 she was chairman of the board of directors of the state oil producer Sonangol . In December 1992 she moved to the Angolan government, where she headed the oil affairs department until 1999. From 1999 to 2000 she was Minister of Industry.

Since then she has been the President's Special Adviser on Regional Affairs. Today she is chairman of the Angolan food bank ( Banco Alimentar de Angola ).

Awards

In 2015 Mello received the Prémio Feminina - an award for outstanding achievements by Portuguese-speaking women. The award is given by the Portuguese Matriz Portuguesa.
