Del LaGrace Volcano (born as Debra Dianne Wood at 26. July 1957 in Orange , California ), also known as Della Grace and Della Disgrace , is American nationality and works in photography , performance art and activist for non-binary gender identity .

Life

Del LaGrace Volcano was born intersex with male and female gender characteristics and raised a girl named Debra Dianna Wood. Volcano studied photography at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1979 to 1981 and received a master's degree in photography from the University of Derby in 1992 .

In his own Instagram profile, Volcano 2019 explains: "I am a non-binary , gender- non - conformist intersex artist, activist and educator, born in California and Sweden after 26 years in London."

Career

Della Grace was the stage name until the 1990s . After Johnny Volcano married, Del LaGrace Volcano became a stage name to express rejection of binary gender norms and heteronormativity . Early on, Volcano saw itself as "a self-proclaimed hermaphrodite " and also consciously changed the (female) appearance - for example with facial hair in order to break with classic role expectations and gender boundaries. It is about a constant change between the classic gender roles of man / woman. Volcano's profile, written in September 2005, reflects this approach:

“As a gender variant visual artist I access 'technologies of gender' in order to amplify rather than erase the hermaphroditic traces of my body. I name myself a gender abolitionist . A part time gender terrorist. [...] I believe in crossing the line as many times as it takes to build a bridge we can all walk across. "

“As a gender deviating optical artist, I use 'gender techniques' to enhance the hermaphroditic traces of my body instead of obliterating them. I call myself a sex abuser. A part-time gender terrorist. [...] I believe in being able to cross the line as often as necessary until a bridge is created that we can all cross over. "

Volcanos works deal with and question gender roles and their visual representation. Photographs of lesbian subculture, which show sex in public space , sadomasochistic practices and drug and bar culture, for example, represent a rough image that is to be understood as a conscious counter-staging of a “good” image of lesbians.

In 2002 Volcano was part of the Swiss-German documentary Venus Boyz by Gabriel Baur about drag queens . 2012 Volcano had a " retrospective in the mid-career" (mid-career retrospective) in Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York.
