Karen-Susan Fessel

Karen-Susan Fessel (born December 15, 1964 in Lübeck ) is a German writer.

Life

Karen-Susan Fessel was born in Lübeck and graduated from Ludwig-Windthorst-Gymnasium in Meppen in 1983 . This was followed from 1983 to 1991 with a master's degree in theater studies, German and Romance studies at the Free University of Berlin . In 1992 she did an internship in the radio play and feature departments of the ORB . She has been a freelance writer and journalist since 1993, lives and works in Berlin .

She published novels, short stories and non-fiction books in various publishers ( Berliner Querverlag , Piper , Konkursbuch Verlag , Kosmos-Verlag and Verlag Friedrich Oetinger ).

Karen-Susan Fessel also works as a journalist, primarily for Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe, and as a lecturer for writing seminars. She also holds numerous lectures and readings at home and abroad, B. in Switzerland and Sweden and at the invitation of the Goethe-Institut in Latvia (2006 and 2007), Estonia (2006), Macedonia (2008 and 2009), Serbia, Hungary and Colombia (all 2009). In Colombia, she was also the main speaker at the 5th International Conference on Children's and Youth Literature at the Universidad Central in November 2009. In 2018 she was “Poet in Residence” at Bielefeld University.

In 2020, Fessel was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

  • 2002, 2003 and 2008: Scholarship at the Baltic Center for Writers and Translators, Visby / Gotland, Sweden
  • 2004: Märkisches scholarship for literature
  • 2011: Cross-border commuter grant from the Robert Bosch Foundation (travel grant for Serbia)
