history

The settlement of pre-Roman origin on the western side of the Ligurian coast was founded in the 4th century BC. It formed the capital of the Ligurians , who as a seafaring people controlled large areas between Finale and Sanremo . In the Second Punic War , the city allied with Carthage , but was defeated by the Romans under Lucius Aemilius Paullus Macedonicus in 181 BC. The following year the Ligurians signed an alliance with the Romans, which resulted in the Romanization of the entire region. 45 BC Albingaunum became part of the Roman Empire under Julius Caesar and experienced a period of prosperity as part of the emerging empire. The upswing was further promoted by the construction of the Via Julia Augusta (13 BC), which connected Albingaunum with Spain and southern France . At the same time, the flat area surrounding the city was gradually developed. In the 5th century the city was attacked several times by the Visigoths , who partially destroyed and plundered it. Under Constantius III. the city was rebuilt and fortified with defenses so that it survived the following centuries.
