Albino Aroso

Albino Aroso Ramos (born February 22, 1923 in Vila do Conde , † December 26, 2013 in Porto ) was a Portuguese doctor and politician. He was considered the "father of family planning in Portugal".

Career

Aroso was born the third of six brothers. The father died early. After attending secondary school, he began studying medicine at the University of Porto , which he completed at the age of 24. He entered the service of the Geral de Santo António Hospital in Porto, where he later became Chairman of the Board of Directors.

In 1967 he co-founded the Associação para o Planeamento da Família , which two years later opened the first public and free family counseling center in Portugal.

Until his retirement he taught as associate professor for gynecology and obstetrics at the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar (ICBAS) at the University of Porto.

He was Deputy State Secretary in the Portuguese Ministry of Health in the XI. constitutional government (1987-1991).
