Albrecht Eggert

Albrecht Eggert (born March 23, 1903 ; † January 5, 1977 ) was a German officer in the Wehrmacht and had been part of the resistance group around Ewald von Kleist-Schmenzin since 1933 .

Life

Eggert was the administrator of the Zipkow manor near Stolp in Pomerania. He was a member of the Confessing Church . Eggert was arrested twice in 1934 and 1935 but released again for lack of evidence. As a reserve officer in 1936, he refused to make the required declaration of loyalty to stand wholeheartedly for National Socialism . When Eggert became aware of this, the later Colonel Berndt von Kleist, a cousin of Kleist-Schmenzin, arranged for him to be transferred to the command department of Army Group Center . There was already a small group of anti-Nazi officers around the later Major General Henning von Tresckow . In his characterization of the officers concerned, Fabian von Schlabrendorff writes in his book "Officers against Hitler":

"He (Major iG Hans-Ulrich von Oertzen ) was supported by Captain Eggert, who stood out for his calm and consistency. What distinguished him above all others, however, was the imperturbability of his religious and political worldview, with which he was deeply permeated."

Eggert was actively involved in the preparation of an assassination attempt in March 1944, in which Hitler was to be killed on the way from the airfield to the headquarters of Army Group Center. It didn't happen because Hitler canceled the visit at short notice. Major General von Tresckow asked Eggert on June 15, 1944 whether he was ready to deposit a bomb at the Fuehrer's headquarters . In view of a lack of local knowledge and access difficulties, this plan was discarded due to poor prospects of success. After the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , Eggert, like few other co-conspirators, avoided arrest because Fabian von Schlabrendorff did not reveal the names of his comrades despite the severest torture.
