Alcides Arguedas

Alcides Arguedas (born July 15, 1879 in La Paz , † May 6, 1946 in Chulumani ) was a Bolivian writer, politician and historian.

Life

Alcides Arguedas was born on July 15, 1879 in La Paz. He studied law and political science in La Paz, later sociology in Paris. In several diplomatic trips he represented Bolivia in Great Britain, France, Spain, Colombia and Venezuela. He was also a member of parliament (1916), senator (1940) and at times also Minister of Agriculture.

All his life he observed the customs and cultures of the plateau in the Andes very closely, his work deals with the fate of the Indian population. He pursued racist-evolutionist theses, according to which the Indian population must be separated from the non-Indian population and is rather negative for the development of the country.

He died on May 6, 1946 in Chulumani, the administrative capital of the Sud Yungas Province .
