Alcudia de Guadix (or simply Alcudia ) is one of three localities in the municipality of Valle del Zalabí in the Guadix district , Granada province ( Spain ). With the incorporation of the three localities of Alcudia de Guadix, Exfiliana and Charches , a new municipality called Valle del Zalabí was founded in 1973. Since then, the municipal administration is in Alcudia de Guadix.

A significant number of the community's dwellings are cave dwellings excavated from the clayey soil. Most of the cave dwellings are still inhabited today. In Alcudia de Guadix and the surrounding area there are various cave dwellings that have been prepared as accommodation for tourists. The peculiar and original caves have all the comforts of a modern house. Alcudia is also famous for its bread and is owned by some of the best bakeries in the province.

history

The history of Alcudia de Guadix ( Al Cudiat , Arabic for hill) goes back to a settlement by a primeval people who settled in Zalabí before the Bronze Age. A later settlement of the immediate plain took place only in the 8th century by the Yunds from Syria with their caliphs Walid. From the 10th to the 11th century, a new people settled and built a castle in the place where the pilgrimage chapel of the patron saint San Buenaventura is currently located. On May 11, 1492, the town of Alcudia de Guadix was raised to a municipality by a bull.

Due to the reddish color of its mountain slopes, the place was known among the Muslims as Alcudia Alhambra (Alcudia, the red). After it was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1489, the town became the property of the Crown of Castile. Due to the agricultural wealth and because all the houses in the village had water, Alcudia de Guadix was a remarkable municipality with extensive property as early as the 16th century. The community's baths were also famous, where nightly ceremonies were held, especially for weddings.
