Aldgate is a station on the London Underground . It is located in the City of London in the Travelcard tariff zone 1 and is part of the Circle Line , which circles the center of London. Aldgate Station is also the terminus of the Metropolitan Line , the oldest underground line in London. In 2014, 7.22 million passengers used the station. To the south of it branches off the District Line and north of it the Hammersmith & City Line to the nearby Aldgate East station.

The station was opened on November 18, 1876 by the Metropolitan Railway , the predecessor of the Metropolitan Line. Aldgate was initially the terminus; on September 25, 1882, the extension to Tower Hill followed , with which the inner city ring was completed. During the Second World War , the station was badly damaged by German air raids. Aldgate came into the light of the world when Shehzad Tanweer detonated one of the four bombs detonated in the London transport network in a subway train near the station during the terrorist attacks of 7 July 2005 . Seven passengers were killed.

Aldgate underground station plays an important role in the Sherlock Holmes detective story The Bruce-Partington Plans by the British writer Arthur Conan Doyle , which was published in the short story collection His Farewell Performance .
