Aldo Roberto Boccaccini (* 2. September 1962 in San Rafael , Argentina ) is an Argentine-Italian engineer for nuclear technology and materials scientist and professor at the Department of Biomaterials at the Department Materials Science of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Life

Boccaccini studied engineering at the Universidad Tecnologica Nacional in San Rafael, Argentina, and at the Instituto Balseiro in SC de Bariloche , Argentina, where he graduated in 1987 with a degree in nuclear engineering. He completed his doctorate in 1994 at RWTH Aachen University in the field of materials science. This was followed by several post-doc positions at the University of Birmingham in England and the University of California in San Diego, USA. In 2001 , Boccaccini completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Ilmenau , Germany. In 2000 he moved to the Department of Materials Science at Imperial College London. There Boccaccini was appointed professor of materials science in 2008. In 2009 he was appointed professor and chair holder (Chair of Biomaterials) at the Department of Materials Science at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, where he is still active today.

Act

Boccaccini's research focuses on biomaterials for biomedical applications. These include in particular bioactive glasses and composites , bioactive coatings, tissue engineering , and drug delivery systems. Furthermore, Boccaccini is a pioneer in the field of electrophoretic deposition of different materials.

Boccaccini is a member of the advisory board for the network of Argentine scientists in Germany and has been an international advisor to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation in Argentina since 2008. Boccaccini is also a board member of the European Society of Biomaterials (ESB) and the Federation of European Materials Society (FEMS). Since 2018 he has also been a full member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech).

Publications

He is editor-in-chief of the journal "Materials Letters" and founding editor of the journal "Biomedical Glasses" (available since 2014). He has published more than 800 scientific papers and is co-editor of five books and over 20 book chapters. He was listed in Thomson Reuters' Most Cited Scientists List in 2014 . As of February 2019, he was cited more than 44,000 times and his h-index listed in Google Scholar is 94. In 2018, Boccaccini was again included in the list of the most cited scientists by Clarivate Analytics .
