The daily sunshine duration is at the lower end of the range of values in the USA, between September and mid-December it is even significantly lower.

history

The area of today's Kirby lies in the Green Mountains and, because no good arable land was suspected there, was only released for settlement after the establishment of the Vermont Republic . On October 20, 1786, the government issued a grant (an offer to sell) for an area of 45.7 km² (11,284 acres ), which was given to a group of buyers around Dr. Roswell Hopkins went, who received it in kind for his services on behalf of the Vermont Republic and who had it registered under the name Hopkinsville. Later the area was supplemented by a piece of land from the municipality of Burke , called Burke Tongue. This increased the municipal area by 10.2 km² (2527 acres).

The exact time of the first settlement is unknown; the first documented immigration took place in 1792. The settlement and reclamation proceeded slowly at first; The first birth took place in Kirby in 1802, and the first wedding in 1804. The constituent city assembly met on August 8, 1807.

In 1808 the town was renamed Kirby, although the name can no longer be derived today. The unexpectedly good arable and pasture areas let the population swell quickly; In 1810, more than 300 inhabitants were registered in the census. 520 settlers lived in Kirby by 1840, but after rail lines were drawn through Vermont in the second half of the 1840s, the upward trend was reversed: many residents, especially young people, migrated to the local centers and cities on the east coast, where they were were attracted by factories and large enterprises. Nothing slowed this slow migration for the next 120 years. Only with the general economic boom in Vermont and its connection to the major road systems of the USA did the development turn again around 1970. Since then, Kirby's population has almost doubled. The main economic factors are still agriculture and forestry today.
