Aleksandar Popović (orientalist)

Aleksandar Popović (Serbian Александар Поповић; born 1931 in Belgrade ; died 2014 in Paris ), in French spelling Alexandre Popovic , was a Serbian political scientist, historian and orientalist with a French passport. He is considered one of the most prominent Serbian orientalists.

He obtained his diploma in arabe littéral at INALCO (1957). Having initially been interested in the history of the medieval Muslim world, he turned to the modern and contemporary history of Muslims in the Balkans. He was Directeur de recherche at the Center national de la recherche scientifique ( CNRS ; German  National Center for Scientific Research ) in Paris . He was a foreign member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts . His specialty was Islam in the Balkans and the mystical orders of Islam. Together with Gilles Veinstein he gave the book Les Voies d'Allah. Les ordres mystiques dans la monde musulman des origines à aujourd'hui about the Sufi orders in the Muslim world from the beginning until today. He died in Paris after a long illness.
