The Vytautas Magnus Bridge or Aleksotas Bridge is the bridge in Kaunas , Lithuania , opened in 1948 , one kilometer above the confluence of the Memel and Neris rivers , not far from the Vytautas Magnus Church . The bridge connects the Aleksotas district with the old town of Kaunas and is 256 meters long. Approx. 3000 vehicles per hour drive over the bridge.
history
The Grande Armée of Napoleon built in connection with the invasion of Russia in 1812 several pontoon bridges over the Memel. In 1915 the German Army built a wooden bridge , which was replaced in 1930 by a bridge with a superstructure made of four arched members . The bridge named after Vytautas Magnus was destroyed in 1941. From 1946 to 1948, today's steel girder bridge was built, which has a lifting part in the middle. In 2005 the bridge was renovated and provided with new lighting.
The bridge was once considered the "longest" bridge in the world. The Gregorian calendar was used in Prussia and the Julian calendar in Russia. A time difference of 13 days was overcome during the crossing.
