Alex Friedrich

Alexander W. Friedrich (born February 23, 1971 in Nuremberg ) is a German physician , hygienist , specialist in medical microbiology, virology and infection epidemiology and professor at the University of Groningen .

Live and act

Friedrich studied human medicine from 1990 to 1997 at the Universities of Würzburg , Coimbra and Rome . In 1998 he was at the University of Würzburg with Scripture studies on the epidemiology and genotypic variability of fluorchinolonresistenten pathogens nosocomial infections Dr. med. PhD and fully licensed as a doctor in 1999 . He then worked as an assistant doctor at the Institutes for Hygiene and Microbiology at the University of Würzburg, at the Institute for Hygiene and at the Institute for Medical Microbiology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University and the University Hospital of Münster and at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases at the University Hospital of Münster. In 2004 he was recognized as a specialist in microbiology, virology and infection epidemiology and in 2005 by the German Society for Infectious Diseases. He is a member of numerous national and international commissions and specialist societies. In 2006 Friedrich completed his habilitation at the University of Münster and received the Venia legendi for the subjects of hygiene and microbiology.

After completing his habilitation, Friedrich became senior physician at the Institute for Hygiene at the University Hospital in Münster. Since 2011 he has held the full chair for medical microbiology and hospital hygiene at the University of Groningen and is director of the institute of the same name at the Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen . He has also been the director of EUREGIO projects on several occasions .

Friedrich's main research interests are in the area of hygiene . Here he is primarily dedicated to medical microbiology and hospital hygiene, antibiotic resistance and hospital infections. To date, he has written more than 200 scientific articles in these areas.

  • 2014: Winner of the Johann Peter Frank Medal of the BVÖGD for special services to the public health system in Germany
  • 2019: Robert Koch Prize for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention from the Robert Koch Foundation for his pioneering work in setting up prevention networks to combat multi-resistant germs
