Alex Shapiro
Alex Shapiro (born January 11, 1962 in New York City ) is an American composer.
Shapiro began her composition studies at the age of fifteen with Leo Edwards at Mannes College of Music and with Michael Czajkowski and George Tsontakis at the Aspen Music Festival and School . She then studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music with Ursula Mamlok and John Corigliano . She also took guitar lessons from Marshall Kreisler .
She is a board member of the American Music Center and MacDowell Colony , a member of the ASCAP Symphony & Concert Committee , president of the board of the American Composers Forum of Los Angeles, and a board member of NACUSA , the College Music Society, and the Society of Composers & Lyricists . She was composer in residence of the NOW Music Festival , the Athena Festival at Murray State University and the New Music Festival at Santa Clara University (2006, with Chen Yi and Alvin Singleton ).
