Alexander Herrmann (magician)
Alexander Herrmann (born February 10, 1844 in Paris , † December 17, 1896 in Ellicottville ) was a German-American magician who was known around 1870 as a trick artist who invented numerous illusions. He appeared under the name Alexander the Great / Herrmann the Great or The Great Herrmann .
Life
Alexander Herrmann was the youngest of 16 children of the international Herrmann family of magicians . His parents were the German doctor Samuel Herrmann, who traveled through Europe as a magician, and his wife Anna Sarah Herrmann, b. Meyer. Alexander's brother Compars Herrmann (1816–1887) had left medical school at an early age to pursue his career as a magician.
Alexander joined his brother's stage show at the age of eight, studied with him and toured Europe and South America with him. Around 1876 they parted ways due to an agreement: Compars returned to Europe, and Alexander became an American citizen in Boston in July 1876.
In the 1880s and 1890s, he and his wife Adelaide Herrmann (née Scarsez, 1853–1932) presented an elaborate stage show.
When Alexander suddenly died of heart failure in 1896, Adelaide continued the show, initially with Alexander's nephew Leon Herrmann (1867–1909), until the age of 75.
Today Herrmann has a place in the Hall of Fame of the Society of American Magicians .
