Carl Compars Herrmann (born January 23, 1816 in Hanover ; † June 8, 1887 in Karlsbad ) was a German magician ( illusionist ), art collector and art dealer from the international Herrmann family of magicians .

Live and act

From 1848 Herrmann traveled to Central Europe, England, France and America and retired early in Vienna and devoted himself to collecting and trading in old works of art. In 1852 he married the singer Rosa Csillag . The later opera singer and actress Blanche Corelli came from the soon separated marriage . After his death, Herrmann, also known as a philanthropist, was buried in the old Israelite part of the Vienna Central Cemetery .

Compars Herrmann was the brother of Alexander Herrmann (1844-1896, also a magician).

Relationship with Harry Houdini

There is a related relationship by marriage between the magicians of the Herrmann family and the escape artist Harry Houdini . Compars' first wife Rosa Herrmann-Csillag was a first cousin of the first wife of Houdini's father. Compars Herrmann and Houdini's father were friends, even if they didn't make this public for business reasons.

Honors

In 2008, the Compars-Herrmann-Weg in Vienna-Floridsdorf was named after him.

Today Herrmann has a place in the Hall of Fame of the Society of American Magicians .

Johann Strauss (son) dedicated his Herrmann-Polka , op. 91 ( dedicated to his friend Herrmann , 1852) to him.
