The distillery was built in 1830 by Bulloch, loading & Co. founded. In 1920 it was transferred to Benmore Distilleries Ltd. sold, which also included the Lochruan , Lochindaal and Dallas Dhu distilleries . Operations ceased in 1927 and never resumed when the company was owned by Distillers Company Ltd. in 1929 . (DCL) passed. In 1936 the building was sold again and was used as a bus garage from then on. Large parts of the original buildings are still preserved today. These are sorted into category B in the Scottish monument lists.

When Alfred Barnard visited the distillery on his whiskey tour in 1885, it had an annual production capacity of 125,000  gallons . A 2,500 gallon coarse bladder ( wash still ) and a 1,200 gallon fine bladder ( spirit still ) were available. Unlike most distilleries in Campbeltown, Benmore did not use the water from Crosshill Loch for mashing , but the water from a well on the premises.
