Alexander Puzrin

Alexander M. Puzrin (born July 24, 1965 in Moscow , USSR ) is a Swiss professor of geotechnics at the ETH Zurich , where he works in the field of geomechanics.

Life

Alexander Puzrin was born in Moscow in 1965, where he studied structural engineering at the Moscow Institute of Civil Engineers (1982–1987) and applied mathematics at the Moscow State University (1990). He received his PhD in geotechnical engineering from the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) in 1997 . After research stays as a post-doctoral student at Imperial College London , the University of Oxford and the University of Tokyo , he returned to the Technion as a lecturer and was promoted to associate professor in 2001. In 2002 he was appointed Associate Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology ( USA ). Since August 2004 he has been a full professor for geotechnics at the Institute for Geotechnics at ETH Zurich .

Act

Alexander Puzrin deals with material models for geomaterials and the analysis of progressive and catastrophic failure of soils, with applications in the area of ​​subaeric creeping slopes and tsunamian underwater landslides , with the development of new sensor technologies for geotechnical monitoring as well as with methods for chemical and biological soil improvement. Parallel to his academic work, Puzrin was involved as an expert and consultant in major geotechnical projects in Russia , Israel , Switzerland , Mexico , Great Britain , Azerbaijan and the USA . He is one of the co-founders of the ETH spin-off company Marmota Engineering AG, which offers high-tech services for industrial applications in the field of geotechnical monitoring using optical fibers.

Awards

Puzrin was awarded a Geotechnical Research Medal by the British Institution of Civil Engineers in 2004 and 2013, the George Stephenson Medal in 2013 and the David Hislop Award in 2018. He was also elected editor of the international journal Géotechnique for the years 2012–2015 and has been a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers since 2014. He won the Technion Excellence in Teaching Award in 2001 and the Outstanding Faculty Support Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2003 ; in 2009 and 2013 he was a recipient of the “ Golden Owl ” teaching award from ETH Zurich.
